If you keep birds, chances are good that sooner or later you will have some little ones that require handfeeding. I really didn't want that task but circumstances dictated that I must.
The babies had been abandoned in their nest-box. I found a dead baby and no adult birds were caring for the others so, Momma Bigdog to the rescue. In the nest-box they had no chance. With me hand feeding them they at least had A chance. Baby birds are messy eaters. This may not be a 100% accurate statement considering I am new at this but, it is what I believe. I feed the babies and they wipe their beaks all over my shirt. OK, I can deal with that...yuk. They look up at me with trusting eyes as they guzzle food from the syringe. I have no doubt they are trying to figure out how Momma bird got so ugly AND grew a beard.
Every three hours we run this scenario. The only changes are how much food gets on me and into them. Currently they are getting a lot more inside themselves since they have figured out how to work the syringe end. The more they try to guzzle, the more I let them have. I can already see that this isn't really my cup of tea but, you do what you have to.
Inbetween times, Bigdog has added a blog that will revolve around his art stuff and photography. It can be found HERE! Check it out and let us know what you think!
