A woman was kidnapped, raped, stabbed, and underwent a horrific ordeal. She was a victim of multiple crimes against her person. The people guilty of these crimes earned, and deserve, serious punishment.
I fail to see the fact that she was black and the guilty parties being white should instantly elevate this to a "hate crime". Racial tolerance will NEVER happen as long as we can view things as white on black = HATE CRIME. Does this mean that every time a black gangsta robs a white person, stabs a white person, beats a white person, it is also a "hate crime"? The simple fact that we have "hate crime" as an option in our legal system insures that we will never view one another, regardless of race, sexual orientation, or religious belief, as just human beings. The outrage here should be the fact that this horrendous crime was committed against a human being.
Instead we get things like:
"Every black preacher in that city and every concerned, fair-minded white person in that city ought to get together," Cox said in telephone interview from Ohio, where he is based. "We need to march and protest."(Clipped from a news article)
The emphasis here is on color, NOT humanity. Marching and protesting is going to accomplish a whole bunch, right? The marching and protesting will draw lots of publicity (obviously the intent) and further increase the gap between colors. The victim of the crime deserves to see justice carried out. Does she need to see folks jumping on a convienent bandwagon to further their own agendas? Can JUSTICE be carried out without color, after all, the lady depicting justice wears a blindfold. Hate crimes should be REMOVED from the legal system and CRIMES should be treated equally and severely, across the board. Crime is crime, and should be treated as such.
