In World War II, the government encouraged folks to plant a victory garden. Many things were rationed and fresh fruits and vegetables were hard to come by. People planted gardens in their yards, much encouraged by the government to do so. It made sense then, it makes sense now.
With the cost of everything going up, it just makes good sense to grow your own, what ever you can, as much as you can. The rising cost of fuel is skyrocketing the prices for anything that gets transported. That means EVERYTHING is going up except wages. Some of the increases being seen are questionable in my mind but it doesn't matter, costs have gone up. The Victory Garden concept worked good in the 40's, it can work better now. Enter the urban garden, small plots filled with the veggies you will actually eat. No point in growing stuff you don't like. A few chickens for eggs and meat, perhaps a few rabbits, we are talking growing your own, reducing your grocery bill. The normal household has many areas where budget cuts can be made and a lot of folks have already made those cuts. Now you are getting into the need to reduce and very little left TO reduce. Grow your own! No, I am NOT talking about your favorite herbal, self medicating, roll your own. I AM talking about vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, corn , beans, and whatever else you like to eat and is suitable for your neck of the woods. Growing your own food isn't likely to replace your grocery bill but CAN shrink it down to a more manageable size. Start small, don't get crazy, the most important thing is to START. Even if you have no yard, veggies can be grown in containers, you have NO excuse. The benefits of growing your own is more than money, there is no comparison to absolutely fresh from the garden vegetables. You owe it to yourself to do it now.
