It was inevitable. The latest panhandling line is for gas. It is no wonder considering the price of gas. Being approached in the parking lot with a request for a couple of bucks to buy gas is NOT funny. Better yet, why would I want to give you a couple bucks to buy gas with when I consider food more important?
Ask me for a couple of bucks to buy food will net you a prepackaged bag of a few groceries. I don't give out money to panhandlers, regardless of the sob story. Does that make me an unfeeling ogre? I don't think so. I am willing to help you eat. I'm not willing to help you buy drugs, booze, OR gas. My common sense dictates that I can hand out a little bag of food to help somebody out and believe I have actually helped them. Handing them money on the other hand, I figure I bought them drugs or booze. Food makes sense to me. Handing out money seems a bit crazy, and doing so to help you buy gas so you can go drive around makes no sense whatsoever. Sorry, my good will contains food, not fuel for your car.
