Florida is hunkered down for Fay. Why? The news is making it sound awful and reality is 60 mph winds and rain. Ok, we have had wind and rain before. Could it have been worse? Absolutely. Can it get worse? Yes, but not that likely. Storms tend to lose ground when they hit ground. This one didn't have all that much to begin with so when it begins to lose steam, it should dwindle down pretty fast.
The news is to keep us informed and up to date. It also has to compete with the other news crews so, competition is inevitable. The quickest way to gain viewers is with sensational news. If you don't have sensational news, you need to make some. All these news cast trying to outdo each other leads us to believe things that might not be 100% accurate. You go to the hurricane center and get their latest report and chances are good it isn't going to match what you see and hear on TV or the radio. People seem to forget that news, visual or otherwise, has the human element added to it and does not always ring true. I prefer to take my news in small doses and only believe about a third of it. That doesn't mean I pick the correct third, after all, I have added my own human element into the mix.
