All our eggs in the petroleum basket?

Permalink 12:35:04 pm, Categories: News and Opinions

We consistently demonstrate we aren't too smart. We KNEW, years ago, that petroleum would not last forever. We KNEW the price of crude would ultimately bite us in the backside. We KNEW our vehicles needed to be powered by something else or get fabulous mileage. Instead of making the changes, we stuck our heads in the sand and hoped the problems would all go away. Guess what? The problems didn't go away and are here to stay.

Where are the 100 mpg cars? Why are we bragging over 30 mpg? Where is the solar cars that actually run and drive like real cars? HOW did we drop the ball? The answer is simple, no profit in changing things until we absolutely have to. The fuel companies continue to show record profits, the car manufacturers didn't retool since the current models were selling. Now, last minute changes are an absolute necessity, we have no more choices. Fuel efficiency is no longer an option, it is a requirement. Reduce, conserve, and cut back has all caught us at the last minute. We hit the gas pumps and wonder what we will have for dinner since we just pumped our grocery money into our tank. We have become hostages of our own ignorance. The technology for change has been there right along but, nobody would invest in it since easy money was in staying the same. Hybrid cars COULD have been up to speed and really great buys IF we had applied a little forward thinking. No, that would have cut into our profit, comfort, convenience. We just aren't too bright. Gas guzzlers sold well because we were all buying them. No consideration for the future, just the here and now. Hurts, doesn't it? Now, change has to happen. We cannot afford to wear our petroleum blinders any longer. Wake up and smell the crude! The world supplies of crude are running out and demand is up. We NEED alternative fuel options and we need them NOW.
