Oh yes, the dreaded how to sharpen your lathe tools issue has reared its ugly head. Scary sharp is almost a buzz word now as people become fanatical over sharpening their tools.
I have a thing for burls, in particular, oak burls. They are HARD and they WILL fly apart on you when you least expect it. They are absolutely gorgeous when you get them right.
Weedpots is a catch all kind of category for wood turners. Its not really a vase but is intended to hold dried flowers or some such thing. It resembles a vase but unless it has a glass insert, it is not made to hold water.
A nice chunk of aromatic Cedar on the lathe is a lot of fun. First and foremost, it is SOFT and cuts EASY. Like everything else that has a good side, there IS a downside, dust. Cedar has a wonderful smell unless you are in a cloud of it.
Yes, pun intended, Oak is a REALLY hard wood. I suspect more people don't turn Oak because they don't want to spend all their time sharpening their tools.
A really cool way to color a chunk of oak for an ebonized look is with India ink. I had never tried this but liked the way it looked so I decided to give it a shot.
The bedside table is finally a wrap. It is done. It is out of my shop. My wife is happy with it. I can move on to bigger and better things, well, things, not neccessarily bigger or better but, I can move on!
I COULD claim to be one of those woodworkers that makes no mistakes, never has too much glue in a joint, and all the cuts are right on. That would be a BIG TALE!
I have been chipping away at my shop for what seems forever and I can FINALLY say I am nearly done. The whole process revolved around two principles, it gets wheels, or it gets attached to the wall.
I have looked and read all I can find about lumber storage. The conclusion, there is no good way to store lumber in a small shop. You will have to bite the bullet and give up however much space it will take.
