I just finished loading my truck with my core tools. Of course, I'm going out to build a shed but it got me to thinking about core tools, the tools you use all the time. In my truck I have a circular saw, jig saw, large speed square, level, 2 section cutting guide, and a large panel square. Not all that impressive until you throw in a hammer, several clamps, and saw horses, as well as a tape measure. OK, I didn't put in an extension cord since there is supposed to be one on site. I DID put in my cordless drill, spare battery, and charger, just in case. Where I am going SUPPOSEDLY, has everything I need and I really didn't have to bring anything. Yah, right. Even if they DO have everything, I am more comfortable using my own tools. I have developed a feel for these tools since I use them so often. They were purchased to suit me, not anybody else. The same is true for every tool in my shop. They suit me, or they go away. Regardless of what job I am working on, I still have a core of tools that I use, over and over. The circular saw for bringing things down to managable size or making small sticks from big ones. I seldom use the circular saw without the speed square to guide my cut square and the two section straight edge guide is used when I cut down plywood panels. The clamps are used on almost everything hence the saying, "You can never have too many clamps." The sawhorses I use are folding metal legs with a 2 x 6 top. I think the package claimed they would support 1000 pounds. I haven't had that much on them but they are sturdy and I like that. The large panel square gets used seldom but when you need it, you need it, otherwise it hangs on a peg. The cordless drill is used everywhere, on everything. You really can't do much of anything without a way to measure so, a tape measure is a must.
OK, now think about YOUR core tools. What tools do you use the most? What tools make you feel like you can build anything? These are the tools you cannot live without. These are the ones you must search out to find the ones that suit you. Good luck! I've got mine.
