The most used tool in the shop depends on the shop and what they make. For me, it is my battery powered drills. I have one set up for driving screws and the other for drilling pilot holes. Other than charging batteries and replacing the bits I break, I seldom use them for anything else. Keep in mind that I do a more general type of woodwork and have not specialized in any particular form.
Ryobi 18 volt Cordless Drill/Driver Kit For most of my ripping of boards to width, I will either use my circular saw with a guide (really great for ply) or I use my cheapy table-saw. A lot of folks say to buy the biggest, most powerful, tablesaw you can afford. Well, when I built the cabinets for my kitchen, I WISHED I had a saw like that. Now that I am not building big cabinets, I'm glad I don't have to give up the floor space to some 9000 pound behemoth. When I crosscut, I use my circular saw with a speed sguare guide or I use my old radial arm saw. Either way, I get good cuts. If I need to cut something squirrelly, with a lot of curves to it I will either use my jig saw or the bandsaw. I favor the bandsaw with thicker stock and the jigsaw with the thinner stuff. SHARP blades are a must or you will spend time sanding fuzz. That pretty well covers the basics. Saws to cut with. Squares and guides to assist in the cutting and drills to put things together. A handful of basics will allow you to do a lot of woodwork. Everybody has their own version of basics. For me, the most used tools are my drills simply because I use them on EVERYTHING, not just woodwork. Hanging verticals, I shoot the screws with my drill. Assembling grills, I run screws with the drill. Chances are good that if it uses screws, I will use my drill.
