In case you hadn't noticed, we are indeed experiencing recession. Less disposable cash thanks to nasty gas prices and all the other fuel based ramifications. Don't let your woodwork suffer due to short cash. Wood is all over for free if you look for it. Construction site dumpster are still prime, don't forget to get permission. Boat yards do toss some usable wood, sometimes even nice stuff. Never forget the potential of the lowly pallet as a source of wood either. Your local flyer/thrifty nickle/home town publication probably has some ads for free or cheap wood. If you watch close you will also find people selling off tools at prices well within an anemic budget.
Of course flea markets and yardsales are great sources for tools and wood. Some of the wood may be in the form of a really cheap table, chest, hutch, whatever. As long as it is solid wood and fits your budget, the price might just be right! There is nothing wrong with picking up old furniture and reinventing it into whatever project you have in mind. A lot of the older stuff is really nice hardwood and can be gotten for a song compared to the same wood in the wood store.
Just because things have gotten tight doesn't mean your woodworking has to go on hold. Use your head, shop smart, build smart. Play your cards right and your woodworking will never know about the recession!
