Wood comes from trees. There it is, a simple, in the nutshell statement. Oak wood comes from oak trees. Pine wood comes from pine trees. Magnolia wood comes from Magnolia trees. Plastic wood come from Plastic trees? Ouch, things are not as simple as it would seem. Let’s try another way…

Trees have two classes, hardwood and softwood. OK, that sounds easy enough, right? Hardwood would be hard and softwood would be soft. Unfortunately, it does not work that way either. Balsa wood, remember that really soft wood that is great for modeling, is actually a hardwood. Maple can be gotten as soft maple or hard maple. Pine can be either soft pine or hard pine. What’s up with all that?
