They KNEW the limits of their material and used that knowledge to the fullest. If we are to even consider being their equals in ability, we MUST know wood. Knowledge was power then, the same as it is today. The more we know about wood, the better able we are to work with it and achieve results that will outlive us.
Moisture content in wood is a hotly argued topic. I have heard it said that 4 or 5 weeks sitting in the environment it will be used will allow the wood to equalize to the 6 to 8 % moisture content best suited for furniture. That would make perfect sense IF each area of the country didn’t have moisture contents (humidity) all over the chart. I have read a good bit about moisture content, most of it leaving me doubtful about the usability of ANY lumber. I try to keep my lumber in my shop for a few weeks before I begin using it.
