Lumber grading is another area that you might want to look into. For me, price is my deciding factor, especially at the wood rack. I see very little difference between what I know is a common versus a select. The big choice here is how many defects can you live with? For me and most of my projects I LIKE character (defects) so boards targeted to be painted (hiding the defects) are my first choice for natural finishing since I like the character of the board to show. Your mileage will vary on this according to your taste in lumber.
