Every woodworker needs a good workbench. What makes a good workbench? It is sturdy, stable, sits at the right height for you to work at and doesn’t take you to the cleaners to build it. Keep in mind; this is MY description for a good workbench. You don’t have to agree. Over the years I have built more workbenches than I care to remember. Some were truly awful, a few were more works of art than users, and the rest all served their functions exactly as what they were built for. I hope that you will build a good one that will serve you for many years. Your workbench is an investment in your woodwork that will be done in the future. Keep this longevity in mind while you build. You are building as much for today as for the future. Don’t cut too many corners in the process.
A four foot workbench can be built if that is all you have room for. I suggest you build bigger, somewhere around six foot. I am advocating you use pine to build with. It’s cheap, it’s forgiving, and it will last a long time.
The bench height is a tough one to figure out. You need this height to suit YOU, not the guy who presented the plans. I can’t help you too much there other than tell you I am an inch shy of six foot tall and I prefer a taller bench.
