As a woodworker, you have an opportunity to reclaim or salvage a lot of good wood just by looking around you. Woodpiles can yield some incredible wood. This wood will take a lot of effort to turn into usable boards but that IS possible. If you are a wood turner, the woodpile is nothing more than a stockpile of bowl blanks, just waiting to be used. The trash pile at construction sites will yield 2x4 pieces, 2x6 pieces, odd shaped plywood, and depending on the site, you will occasionally find some really good stuff. By having the habit of recycling/reclaiming wood you are reducing the load on the landfills and saving money. Recycling/salvaging wood is a win/win combination, and a great habit to have.
By now you know a little bit about wood in general and a little bit about reclaiming/salvaging wood. It’s time to move on to more meat here. By the time wood has reached the racks in your favorite wood store it has been through many processes. The tree itself was cut down, the log loaded and transported to the mill. The log itself is graded at the mill to determine what it is best suited for. The graded logs are then routed around the yard to their respective areas. Recommend this article...
