As a tree begins to grow it has branches all over it. The branches will break off, be torn away, or fall prey to disease. The stubs can be grown over into the wood itself. What we are talking about is knots. Knots are considered defects. Knots can be incredibly hard and cause issues when cutting, they can also be loose and fall out when cutting or just moving around. Structurally they are considered weak points. Visually, they are considered blemishes. I see knots as character, and have no problem using lumber with knots. I work WITH the knots and like the look. This is MY preference; you may not feel the same way. When you are looking at lumber, look for what will work best for YOU.
