A trip to your favorite lumber store can turn you into the equivalent of a kid in a candy store. Just like the kid, your enthusiasm can work against you and the “candy” you buy may not be as good as you thought. Pick your lumber with an eye for quality. A board with beautiful appearance along with being crooked as a dog’s hind leg CAN be used, but you will have a LOT of waste. If the beauty offsets the amount of waste, go for it. If the beauty does NOT justify the amount of waste, set that board aside and let somebody else buy it. A handy thing to do which can teach you a lot is to make a trip to the lumber store and not buy anything. Hang around the lumber racks and watch people buying lumber. You will see people flipping through boards, sighting down the edges and faces, placing them aside in their own personal “reject” pile and checking more. Eventually these folks will find what they are looking for. If you keep tally, these folks will buy maybe one out of every ten boards. Don’t walk away yet, we aren’t done. Recommend this article...
