Valentine's Day is right around the corner and offers a great excuse to be out in the shop building something. Think "Heart shaped box" and you will have a winner. The easiest way to make a pattern is to fold a sheet of paper in half and cut out half a heart. When you unfold the paper you will have a symmetrical heart pattern. OK, set that aside for the moment.
Gather up some of your scraps, square them up so the pieces are all the same size then stack glue them together, clamp them up and set aside to dry. Glue up however many of these squares as you want to make hearts. They have to be big enough squares that your heart pattern can be cut out from them.
Trace your heart pattern onto your glued up square then cut out the heart on the bandsaw. OK, you now have a heart shaped block of wood. Now, slice off a top and a bottom from the block. Actually cut from top and bottom and each slice will be a heart. mark the slices for orientation and set aside. With the remaining heart shaped block, start a cut at the 'V" and cut out the inside of the heart, leaving a quarter inch or so for wall thickness.
Now, you have a heart shaped hollow form, and two heart shaped slices. Glue your opening cut (the "v" back together), glue on the bottom, sand and finish to suit yourself and you have a simple heart shaped keepsake box that pretty much anybody will like. Enjoy!
