What makes band saw boxes so wonderful? They don’t require a shop full of expensive tools, they have unlimited design potential, and they’re easy to make. For years, woodworker Donna Menke has researched every aspect of the process, accumulating a wealth of knowledge about band-saw use, safety precautions, construction, and finishing techniques. Here, she passes on those ideas and skills, explaining all the basics of selecting and handling the wood, cutting, sanding, fitting edges, gluing, making repairs, and giving the box a gorgeous surface treatment, such as carving or inlay. The breathtaking projects begin with an easy, no-fail Bangle Box, and include a mahogany Star Box, a Man in the Moon box with a segmented lid, and many others.
Ultimate Book?March 6, 2008 I expected much more than what the write up and title of the book promised. Quite the opposite. The picture on the cover is a nice looking box, but again misleading. If you can figure out how to build that box from this book, good luck.
It is hard to read, and correlating with the pictures on how and what to do from the beginning to the end of this book is a mess. There is a complete lack of what a person using a band saw if building boxes can, should or learn how to do in this book. It is lacking.
The projects are meant, in my opinion, for middle schoolers or below. Again, hard to understand. There isn't any real description of process that is of value in this book. They are poorly written, confusing and it is obvious who ever wrote this book or published it really didn't know how to write an instructional book of this type or know what they were doing.
There are much better books out there. Save you money on this book. I wasted mine.
Go look at the book, The Band Saw Book by Lonnie Bird. Much much better.
Band sawJanuary 18, 2008 Clear, concise and allows woodworker to progress from simple to complex concepts. A great place to begin
Good Book for BeginnersJune 23, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a good book, but not what I would call ultimate. It has nice pictures and good projects. I would also recommend Tom Crabbs' book, "Making Wood Boxes With a Band Saw". Together, these 2 books will have you well on your way to making excellent bandsawn boxes. Just add a little imagination and you will have gift ideas for life.
An OK bookJune 20, 2007 I enjoyed this book, but the designs are not very interesting for my tastes.

Really enjoyed the book and Donna is great person who is willing to share her ideas and experience with all her readers. She is a member of bandsawboxes group on yahoo and is happy to answer questions about her book, bandsaws and other woodworking topics. Great Book!
