The question was asked of me, "WHY did I BUY a workbench instead of building it?"
Well, there is no easy answer to that. I have built many workbenches, some of them worked great and some of them were awful. After all these various benches, a simple idea began to take shape in my mind. I can use a simple workbench to do all my woodwork. I don't need all the bells and whistles any more than I need it to weigh a gazillion pounds. I know the type of woodwork I do and I can do just fine with a simple workbench. OK, I'm sold on simple. Over the weekend my smarter half was going to help me with some organizing in my shop. The immediate issue was no drawer space available. OK, I can do with a simple workbench but, I want it to have drawers too. Another ugly issue reared its head about this time, I have some building to do and since I have been cleaning out my shop I seem to have misplaced my workbenches. Actually, one of them was disassembled to allow salvaging of the wood and the other was given to my son who had been complaining to good ol' Dad that he really needed a small workbench.
OK, my shop had ZERO workbenches and jobs pending. AH-HA, the timely arrival of the Harbor Freight flyer! Look at that, right on the front page, a simple workbench with FOUR DRAWERS! Ever have one of those EUREKA! moments? So, THAT is how I wound up buying a workbench instead of building one. It took me about an hour round trip to go get it and a little over an hour to assemble it. I have been using it from that point on.
SEE! 4 Drawers!!!
Nifty end vise!
As you can see, I am using the bench and am well pleased with it. Keep in mind, I knew it was a cheap bench and I looked over the floor display closely to discover its shortcomings. For my purposes, it works just fine. I wouldn't pay the 200 bucks it normally sells for but the 150 was right up my alley. End vise, drawers, shelf, and work surface, yup, it works for me!
