If you've got a little chainsaw, some chainsaw savvy, and a touch of artistic ability, chainsaw art might be worth considering. Be aware, this is dangerous and not suited for just anybody with a chainsaw. Practice wood can be found nearly anywhere a tree is cut down and most folks have no problem giving you the big chunks of tree and they don't CARE what you are going to do with them! The only thing most of these folks want is the tree to be gone and out of their yard. Some of the chunks can be resawn with the chainsaw into manageable hunks and then cut into boards with your bandsaw. Some of the chunks will lend themselves to some chainsaw carving. The simplest way to go at this is to visualize what you want to carve and then cut away everything that doesn't look like it. OK, a little too basic perhaps, but true. I generally use a magic marker and roughly sketch out what I want on a chunk of wood. I try to do so in a 3d fashion since I want to carve in the round, not flat. A little Internet searching will produce plenty of sites for tips, pointers, or just ides and is a good place to start.
Using a chainsaw in this fashion raises the risk of kickback and chainsaws cut skin and bone way faster than they cut wood. IF you try this, use all the protective gear and do so at your own risk. The possibilities for chainsaw art are limited only by your imagination and ability. For some folks, simple furniture whittled out via chainsaw is the extent of their interest, odd chairs, tables, just think simple. For others, bears, birds, and animals of all kinds take shape as the chips fly. It is an interesting thing to do and when a piece doesn't turn out alright, it is always good firewood. Keeping the chips cleared out of the saw is tough to do and you will need to clean your airfilter often as the sawdust will clog it pretty quick. Really big chunks of logs can be made a bit more mobile by placing them on a wheeled dolly that has locking wheels. This goes a long way when you are trying to move a monster around in the driveway. If the idea appeals to you, give it a go. It can be fun, entertaining, and educational. You can learn a lot whittling on a log with a chainsaw. The most important thing is to do so safely, accidents while doing this are normally serious. Good luck!
