Having enough clamps is almost an impossibility. Just when I think I have just the right amount, I start more projects than I have clamps for. Occasionally you need more clamp than you have or at the very least longer jaws. Sometimes you can get lucky with just a couple chunks of wood.
The couple of sticks of pine extended my jaws far enough to allow me to clamp what I wanted. Nothing special, just some riser sticks I use for clamping protection when gluing and lifting things off my bench when finishing or gluing. Handy to have and lend themselves nicely to being made from scraps and can be whatever size you need!
This is a little better view of how I am using the scraps to extend the reach of my clamps. I am actually holding the back shelf unit (dark brown) in alignment with the new one I am building (pine). Worked great.
If you look at the above picture you will see all kinds of clamps in use. The two bys are spacers cut to hold things in alignment while I try to visualize what I am building. Winging it is not always a good idea and sometimes, even with a plan, you need to stop, smell the coffee and perhaps do a mock assembly to help preserve your vision. In my case I not only smell the coffee, I drink a good bit of it too!!!
