Wally world had a 20 inch box fan for 20 bucks and I bought it. It is right convenient that they also had a 20 inch house filter. Joining the two together gives you a great way to remove some of the dust floating around in your shop. You can be as frugal or elaborate as you want but, the box fan and house filter is a woodworker's dream. My roof joist are 24 inches apart so I attached a scrap 1 x 4 x 21 to one side, leaving the lip to the inside and a 1 x 6 x 13 scrap to the other side, again with the lip inside. The fan sits on top of the filter which rests on the two lips, oriented to pull the air through the fan. Dust is sucked up, mostly caught in the filter and the hot air from inside my shop blows out through the ridge vent. OK, I opted for down and dirty, get the job done rather than fancy, work of art stuff. The setup works. No, the fan won't last forever being used this way but it wasn't going to last forever anyway. This is not the first time I've done this so I know it works well and cheap too!!
