Take a look through some fishing supply catalogs and you will no doubt run across some pricey racks to hold fishing poles.  If you look closely at the pictures you can pretty well see how they are made.  You can make them as complex as you want to challenge yourself or simple enough to make a good project for kids or beginning woodworkers.  The real beauty here is they can easily be built from left over scraps.  In their simplest forms, a couple of upright boards joined to a couple of crossmembers that are notched/bored to fit fishing poles.  The uprights can be nailed to the cross members  and you have a very basic but functional rack.  If you opt to build this way, the rack won't last long.  My version of simple would be to use glue and screws to make the joints, increasing longevity considerably.  If you dado the cross members into the uprights using glue and screws, the life expectancy is even longer.  The same joint can be done using biscuits.  If you want to test your skills a bit, try using a sliding dovetail to make the joint.  Doing it this way can be frustrating if you have trouble getting the dovetail width right but, the finished product is worth the effort.  OK, stop and think about this.  I gave no pictures, just verbal ideas, I suspect you were able to form a mental image of what I was talking about even if you didn't look for a picture someplace.  The same basic principles can be applied to any project.  This fishing pole rack could just as easily have been a bookcase, bucket shelf rack, or anything else.  Basic joints, basic techniques, and some practice, you can build anything that strikes your fancy.  What are you waiting for?  Go build something!!!
