Found Wood

OK, so I am a gazillion miles away from home and busy doing the tourist thing. That does NOT mean I am not thinking wood. I went out for a walk along San Francisco Bay and while enjoying the scenery I took note of some very large timbers battering themselves into toothpicks. Here was these two 8x12 by a good 10 foot long timbers just floating when they weren't crashing against the rocks. I eyeballed them and saw several projects that could rise from them IF they were recovered from the water and used rather than left to slowly erode themselves away against the jagged rocks. Painfully, I left them where they were since I had no way to get them back to my shop, you know, the one a gazillion miles away...

This little discovery prompted me to look a bit closer at waters edge while I walked. NO, I didn't see any more prime timbers. I DID see what appeared to be a fence post and a couple good chunks of driftwood, gnarled and barely floating. OK, so in the span of a mile or so (keep in mind I am walking, I didn't cover that much ground) I have spotted several nice chunks of wood suitable for some project or another in the shop. The benefits here are no COST for the wood other than time and you are cleaning up the environment at the same time. That certainly sounds like a win-win situation to me!

Next time you are out and about keep your eyes open for abandoned wood that can be reclaimed and turned into your next masterpiece. It's out there, you just have to find it!
