I mentioned a while back that this is a good time to buy some real estate if you are in a position to do so. The banks however, will nickle and dime you to death and are very reluctant to loan, especially on a fixer-upper. Unless some other earth shattering event happens between now and two days from now, I will close on a fixer upper. My first order of business will be to deal with soft floors. Cut out the bad until you find good, replace/repair any joists as needed and replace the cut out portions of floor with good floor. Pretty standard repairs in older homes. Steps to be replaced/rebuilt and pressure treated lumber is the only way to go here unless you use something other than wood. On the outside, I will be replacing some rotted T-111 ply siding and do some painting. Anything else is either too minor for me to fool with now or too major for my budget to stand. On the plus side, my son will have a house, on the down side, I'm not in the swamp hunting. I do plan to sneak off a day or two while the work is in progress on the house and I figure it is a safe bet I will get coal for Christmas.
A lot of home repairs are well within the capability of most woodworkers. Chances are pretty good if you are a woodworker, you are handy with your hands. The internet can provide a host of information and how-to's on pretty much any repair you might want to tackle. Personally, if it is wood, it is for me. If it involves pipes and such, I prefer to make a call. Knowing your own shortcomings is a good thing. Learning your own shortcomings can be disasterous and costly. I don't do plumbing. Good luck, good projects!!!
