OK, I confess, I'm not spending time in the shop, I'm out in the woods looking for invisible deer and vocal hogs. Obviously, since they are invisible, I have seen no deer. The hogs being vocal are being heard but not seen. Moccasins on the other hand are frequent nasty distractions. I have been taking note of some of the odd bits of wood scattered about and did some mental exercises of making things from them whilst my butt goes numb in a tree stand. For those of you where collecting these odd bits is legal, I would suggest you gather them up and take them home. The rest of us need to consider the possibilities and leave the odd bits right where they lay. The odd broke off branch will make a good bandsaw box provided the wood has not gone punky...almost rotten, very soft and crumbly. With Christmas around the corner, a batch of wood tops turned from wood gathered by the kids/grandkids during an outing will make memorable gifts. Those of you that cut your own Christmas trees or Hanukkah bushes as a friend of mine calls his, the cut offs to fit the stand can be sliced into thin disks and made into refrigerator magnets, signs, and a host of other cutesy things OR, the thin slivers can be strategically placed so the fresh pine scent will permeate the room. Bigger chunks of downed trees can be used for progressively bigger projects, to include bandsawing your own lumber.
Just in case the rest of you are interested, the swamp where I am hunting has been 70 degrees in the morning going up to the 80's in the afternoon. Hot and humid seems to be the standard. Yes, even here in Florida, those temps are not the norm for the middle of the state. The snakes are out in force yet the bugs are less than normal. I hate the bugs but, I would rather the bugs than the snakes. Ya'll go make chips, I'm going out to find an invisible deer!
