This is the time of year that it seems all kinds of last minute stuff pops up to slow us down. Two weeks until Christmas, if you haven't finished all the gifts you've been making in the shop, shame on you. If you are still working on stuff to sell during the holidays, you started your projects too late. A productive shop needs to plan and start projects like magazines do their new issues, months in advance. Yes, it is difficult to think about holiday projects during the summer when the fish are biting but failing to do so, leaves you in a holiday crunch. Perhaps, THIS year, we will all learn our lessons and be better prepared for next year. Even non-commercial, hobby shops, need to plan and plan in advance. Commercial shops already know about deadlines and tend to work with them, even when they are wrong, they are in the ballpark. Hobby shops tend to go with the flow which is fine until holiday time rolls around. Oh dear, I need to build a half dozen Christmas gadgets and I only have two weeks remaining, AND I have to work, Christmas shop, get in some hunting time and go to the drag races over the weekend...
Yup, if we had PLANNED correctly, we wouldn't be rushing around trying to accomplish the proverbial silk purse from the sow's ear. Control the urge to rush, slow down, take your time, and above all else, be safe. Shop accidents when trying to rush a job are common. Spending your holidays recovering from an accident won't be fun and odds are good the project didn't get finished either. Be safe. Don't fold under pressure, take a deep breath, slow down, and do the caliber of work you are proud of. Don't blow it all because you are feeling the pressure and trying to rush to get things done.
OK, for those of us that managed to stay on top of things, started projects at least back when I mentioned doing so if not before, pat yourself on the back! Go out and spend some time in the woods hunting or if you are one of THOSE FOLKS, go play in traffic at the mall. Whatever group you fall into, be safe and enjoy your holidays, whatever flavor they are!
