Right now this minute a tree service is down the road reducing an over-grown oak into something a bit more manageable. The thump of big oak chunks hitting the ground got me to thinking. Most of us have seen similar sights if not been responsible for them oursleves. Big chunks of oak and a chainsaw can produce some nice thick wood plaques for mounting any number of things on. If you decide to do something like this, you will want to seal the fresh cut wood with paint or actual sealer to slow down the drying then stack it in a corner someplace. Be sure and put stickers in between the drying wood to allow say an inch or so of air space. Limbs and what not can be trimmed down and converted to furniture via splitting with a froe like the was done in the past. Some of the best furniture makers still do it this way and it is satisfying to split wood and have it split the way you want. Getting it to split the way you want takes a pretty good eye at reading grain, nice straight grain will work, squirrely grain will make good toothpicks. A good slab of oak and three legs will make a good stool that might set well if you've a cow needs milking. Pretty much, seeing good wood go to waste is a shame. All of us can be observant and perhaps salvage a bit of wood when the opportunity presents itself. Got to cut this short, I need to go see a tree trimmer about hauling off some wood chunks. Have a good one!!!
