Almost every woodworker I have ever talked to, wants to make money from his or her woodwork. A quick Google will show you that this is indeed a fact and a lot of questions are floating around on what to build, how to build, bottom line, show me the money.
Back up a bit and think about how many woodworkers are out there. Yup, a BUNCH. The majority want to make money. Some want to make a living, others just want to cover their expenses and tools. When you start thinking about it, that is a LOT of competition.
Quality alone CAN sell woodwork. It has a LOT of variables to match that statement but it can be done. If you have hob-nobbed with any of your fellow woodworkers, you realize a LOT of them truly make quality goods. A lot of them make great stuff and can't sell it. Some price too cheap, some too high, and most are trying to sell to the wrong market. Imagine that, you need to KNOW your market not just your tools.
Trying to sell the wrong items to the wrong market is an exercise in futility and will discourage you pretty quick. Before you build one hundred plant stands, you need to have done your homework and know you are going to present them to buyers. If you have a space at a car show, you MIGHT sell a few plant stands. If you have a space at a plant fair, you MIGHT sell them all. Either way, you need to plan to SELL and stack the odds in your favor as much as possible.
WHAT to sell is always a tough nut to crack. Chances are good somebody is already selling it. If it is new and unique today, tomorrow there will be tons of people selling it. Plan accordingly. If you have a unique item, build enough to sell don't run out of them because next time around everybody will have them. Woodworkers learn from each other without ever speaking a word. I can look at something today and odds are good I can go home and build it. Most of us lean in that direction. There are no sacred projects, they are all fair game, one way or another.
This is not meant to discourage in any way, This is meant to get your creative juices flowing! Use your talents and put YOU into everything you build. That little special something that makes YOU different from everybody else. It may be a flare for combining woods into beautiful contrasts. It might be a touch of stained glass incorporated into the work or perhaps some silver inlay or gemstones. Use what YOU know. Woodworking is a great hobby and it CAN make money but you need to stack the odds in your favor as much as possible. Begin adding that little something special called YOU, into everything you build. Your market is out there.
