If you have spent any time at all on the Internet, you are aware of tons of free plans for woodworking. Chances are good that somebody has a plan like you are looking for, or close enough to put you in the ballpark. I built a rifle rack after looking at a set of plans, all I wanted to know was rough size, the balance I built to suit my taste. I just finished a bow rack, basically the same way. Nothing says you have to build exactly like the plan you are following. Allowing yourself a little creative license with the design may actually give you something closer to what you wanted. If the plan IS exactly what you want, follow the plan, if it isn't, wing it. Now, keep in mind I am talking not following a plan when you have that kind of leeway. If you are building cabinets for a kitchen, all bets are off. You know when you start a project, how much fudge room you have, work with it. If you are really 'ballpark' oriented, "close enough" is somewhere around the width of your thumbnail. The rest of us will hold as close to the mark as we can. Keep in mind that tolerance of plus or minus something, is there for a reason. In most cases, if you can hold a sixteenth of an inch, your project will be fine or better than fine. Plans can be as useful as WE allow them to be. If you need plans, follow them. If you don't need plans, wing it. The big thing is to enjoy what you do, while you are doing it!
