Raised bed planting is taking us by storm! Now especially, is a good time to consider a raised bed and perhaps planting yourself a garden. The economy suggest this might be a very good idea. 2 by's are my preference and depending on what I can scrounge, I build accordingly. Old waterbed frames make great planter beds since they are 2 x 10's (the ones I have encountered) and can be made higher by attaching a strap on the inside and then adding a second layer. The strap can be whatever scrap you have cut to leave enough to go into the ground as an anchor. I normally build my box or boxes, set them in place where I plan to keep them then point the end of a 1 x 4 that is 6 inches or so longer than my box or boes are high. I drive it into the ground with a sledge hammer and shoot screws into the box or boxes to secure them.
The box or boxes are made whatever length you can get from your material or what fits your space. I prefer my boxes around 3 feet wide so I can easily reach everything from either side. The width, like the length, is whatever suits your material or your fancy best. I use butt joints and screws to hold everything together. If you paint them before assembly with a good outdoor paint, they will look good and last longer.
Now that you've got your planter boxes all built and in place, you need to fill them. Bags of dirt can be bought if you need to or have no other choice. The other option is to layer your filling like you were building a compost pile. I have done this a few times and planted right in the piles with no problems.
This is a simple project. It should be no stress, no strain, no problems. Keep it simple. Keep it functional. Keep it growing. Good luck!!!
