The cost of lumber keeps rising and it is getting harder and harder to keep a project budget within reasonable terms. Enter the world of salvage wood. Not glamorous, not easy, and a lot of work, the redeeming value is wood for cheap or free.
The average recliner has a frame of hardwood. This is not an easy task to rip apart and salvage the wood but it can be done and occasionally the wood is worth the effort. Discarded furniture sits alongside the road waiting to be hauled to the dump. Inside a lot of this junk furniture is good wood just waiting on a creative woodworker to free it from the mundane existence it has been living. Coffee tables, end tables, old desk, all offer potential salvage for those with a good eye. Low end pressboard stuff needs to be left for the junk men. Be on the look out for the quality junk, used to be high end, or almost high end furniture will yield workable lumber and some of it will be surprisingly good. Oh yes, there is a downside, nails, staples, glued joints, all have to be undone. The issue is one of simple finance, if you have more money than time, buy lumber. If your time outweighs your budget, salvage may be just the answer you are looking for.
