Lots of folks do scroll saw work. Some of these folks make good money doing it, most do it more for the hobby aspect. I have an on and off relationship with scrollsawing. Once I get going at it, I generally do a good bit of it then I'm off and I don't even consider it, until the next time. My last scroll saw bit the dust a good while back. It had been used, abused, called dirty names, and praised over many years. Once it died, I was very slow to replace it. I got online and checked other folks reviews of various models, compared them to my budget, and did a mental check on manufacturer. I can't justify a large expenditure for a scroll saw as i don't use it THAT much. I DO however use them and on occasion, require their capabilities. I ran down to my local lumber store and came home with the Hitachi CW-40.
The stand assembles easily and the saw is ready to go right out of the box, complete with blade in place. Personally, pinned blades are not what works for me so I had already bought some pinless blades to use with it. Many of the reviews complain about how hard it is to change the blades on this saw. Looking at it in the store I was a little concerned over this myself. I have big hands, fat fingers, and don't do well with tight spaces. I had no trouble changing the blades. I actually like the thumb screw arrangement and founf it worked very well for me.
The saw, on a rough cut 5/4 cedar board did well. I cut out my pattern with no difficulty. The on-board light is nice, the built in blower is marginal but can be made to work with careful placement. The variable speed and on/off button placement make it easy to use. All in all, I really like it. If your budget is thin and you aren't expecting to set the world afire with your scroll saw work, this saw is for you and me. It works great, is very capable, and well worth the price!
