You aren't still working on Christmas stuff are you? Here it is, December 14th, you should be working on Valentine's Day stuff. The Christmas market by this date is pretty much lost. If you haven't gotten your wares out in front of people, what ever you are still working on is most likely for next year. Right now, people are rushing around beginning a wave of madness shopping that begins and ends with finding the bargains. If you are still working on Christmas stuff, you have missed your target market. If you are still working on Christmas stuff like personal gifts for special people, you need to kick things in high gear as your time is running out. Kicking into high gear does NOT mean rushing to finish, it means you need to spend more time in the shop. I covered the 'rushing to finish' mindset recently so I won't revisit it too much. Right now, my shop has a couple of stacks of pending lumber, earmarked for a couple more gun racks since the one I built for myself has prompted some request from family members. Other than that, I have some glue ups clamped up and a heart shaped pattern I cut from paper. The glue ups and pattern will be used for heart shaped bandsaw boxes which seem to do well around Valentine's Day. Getting into the habit of planning forward is the only way to really be ready for any holiday. Try going to your local Wally world and see if they have any squirt guns. Chances are real good they don't since those will come in around spring for the summer market. If you are trying to make some money working holiday goods, the goods have to be complete BEFORE the holidays, plus some time in advance so folks can buy them as gifts. The only reason I seem to be hammering this concept is in today's economy, more and more folks are trying to make a buck where ever they can, woodworkers especially. If you are trying to make money from your shop, adopt a business mindset. Track your expenses, know what an item costs you to produce, including a fair wage for your time. Good luck to you and I wish you and yours the best for the holidays! Merry Christmas!!!
