Drywall is not one of my favorite things nor is trying to repair it and retexture it. Having had folks look at what I wanted to do and being told the only way they would do it was to replace everything, I jumped on it myself. Old school drywall usually has paper tape at the seams and over time it cracks and begins to look bad. In a large room with several seams doing this, it becomes a pain to look at.
Removing the old tape is pretty easy and if you get lucky, it will come off as one long piece and not make too big of a mess. If you aren't lucky, it makes a real mess. The new tape looks more like a mesh and actually has adhesive on it so it will stick where you put it. Roll out your new seaming tape then gradually build up the thickness with joint compound to match the rest of the ceiling. Now you can tackle some texturing!
The old texture was a typical brush swirl. Not wanting to radically redo things I am simply tapping over it with a brush loaded with joint compound. I rather tlike the look and it gives me a great way to hide my repairs as well
.
Yes, my head shines like new money. As you can see from the picture, this isn't rocket science by any means. However, my drywall was firmly attached and in good overall condition. Tapping joint compound to the ceiling creates a pull on the ceiling so it must be firmly attached or it will come crashing down. That would be a REAL mess.
