It is no secret that I use Ryobi battery powered tools. I generally keep two cordless drills, one for drilling and one for driving screws. The 14 volt pair were given to my son and I had been reduced to just one 18 volt and was doing pretty good with it. Plenty of power to drive the screws I normally use and anything else I asked of it was done just fine. The need to replace my hedge trimmer came up and since the trimmer I have was electric, drag the cord around, don't use it when the grass is wet variety, I went shopping. The gas trimmers caught my eye just long enough for me to see the price tags, nope, I'm NOT spending that much. The battery powered trimmers could fit my purposes but I had some reservations about them. Battery technology just isn't there yet when it comes to serious power like trimming hedges. Ryobi makes a small hedge trimmer, 18 volt that uses the same batteries as my cordless drill and I figured it was worth a shot. My mental games convinced me that an additional cordless drill with TWO batteries and charger would also be needed. This was to make sure I had plenty of batteries since the hedge trimmer comes with NO BATTERIES or charger. Yeehaw, Tool shopping I will go!
The hedge trimmer works fine. It is a little slow, it will only cut up to 3/8ths of an inch but it cuts just fine and the battery life isn't bad.

Sighting down the path you can see some of the trimming I did, all with the same battery.

For my purposes this trimmer works great. It takes a little longer to do my trimming but I can trim when the dew is still on the ground and the temperatures are a wee bit cooler. I don't have to wait for the moisture to dry, the temps to get up to 9000 degrees and I'm not dragging a cord or trying to cut it. These simple things make the Ryobi hedge trimmer great for me. Realistically, I trim my hedges about 3 or 4 times a year and I expect to get a lot of use from this trimmer and it is a LOT lighter and easier to use than my old one. Yes, I like it, you might too! I bought the trimmer and another drill/flashlight combo so I would get the batteries and charger and things are working out just great.
