Smart Guide: Trim: Step-by-Step Projects (Smart Guide)

With my son moving out, his portion of the house is now being reclaimed as part of the whole house rather than a tiny apartment. The "apartment" did what it was supposed to do and served us well but, now it is time for the house to go back to the way it was. The first order of business was to remove the bar that had been built in:

Built in bar

Two battery drills, both Ryobi 14.4 volts. One has a normal phillips screwdriver bit and the other has the same bit with a long extension to reach the hard to get to screws. I have found that having two drills, each set up different, saves me a lot of time in the long run. The bar was held together with drywall screws so demolition was quick and easy.

Demolition of bar

As you can see, the bar was originally built from salvaged lumber. I salvage lumber and plywood whenever I can. The next order of business is to trash the carpet and remove all the tackless that holds it in place along the walls. I cut the carpet down the middle with a carpet knife, pulled it loose from the tackless and rolled it up to carry it out. Two rolls and the carpet was out. The pad was also rolled up and removed. A flat prybar and hammer made short work of the tackless but left nail craters in the concrete. This room began life as a garage, migrated to a bedroom, then a shop, then a living room for a small apartment. Now, it will become a hobby room, floor treatment not required.

Bare floor, carpet removed

The bare floor has paint of various shades, some glue globs, and other markings from its past life. Floor treatment not required but it HAS to be painted! At least it will all be the same color!

Painted floor

THAT looks better! The wall, not the door, has been painted "Country White" and the floor has been painted light gray. Things are beginning to shape up but there is a LOT left to do.
