Amazon.com Product Description Tired of living in a disposable world? Then check out the Drill Doctor 750X drill bit sharpener. This cleverly designed, easy-to-use tool gives new life to old, dull bits. It accepts bits ranging in diameter from 3/32 inch to 3/4 inch and works somewhat like an electric pencil sharpener: Tighten a dull drill bit into the removable chuck, then insert the chuck into the sharpener. Inside is a (replaceable) diamond wheel that quickly sharpens the bit tip. There are two preset positions for honing the two most common drill-bit tip angles: 118 degrees and 135 degrees.
The Drill Doctor 750X will sharpen high-speed steel twist bits, carbide-tipped masonry bits, and titanium-coated bits. It will even sharpen split-point bits and create split-points from standard bits. It comes with a blow-molded storage case, detailed owner's manual and an instructional DVD. Great Value and works excellentFebruary 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was looking at the 500X and then Amazon put this on sale for $100 so I bought it. I watched the DVD and got out a couple of bits and started using it and it worked great. My only complaint is what has said before about this unit: The depth adjusting gauge does not have a locking mechanism so it wanders. This gauge sets the depth as you are placing the bit in the chuck. You then lock the bit and place the chuck in the sharpening opening. So the bit does not move due to the wandering depth gauge, but you do have to readjust it everytime you put in a new bit. This isn't bad if you are doing one or two bits at a time, but if you gather up a bunch to do it can ad a few seconds to each sharpening. The model 500 does not have this feature so it may be a better choice. In my case I couldn't pass up the "better" model for basically the same price. As I said at my first try I sharpened about 50 bits with no problems except adjusting the depth gauge each time.
The Drill Doctor is a Very Useful Well Designed ToolJanuary 14, 2008 The Drill Doctor is a very well designed tool for sharpening drill bits. I have used it on several bit sizes and have found it to be an excellent tool. I should have had one years ago. I highly recommend it.
manufacturer take noteJanuary 14, 2008 The product is great and easy to use once you understand the moves.
The DVD moves fast and was very helpful. After watching it 3 times and reading the instruction booklet to be sure, I gave it a go.
I've been a tech support / teacher for a manufacturer of architectural products and understand the importance of making basic details straight forward for the guys in the field to work. So just note, there are (2) very important and different reference marks to properly line-up along the round bit holder: there's the obvious "marked" white lines and the other not so obvious ones left black, "unmarked". In addition to their protruded shape, why not strike these lines in "red" to make them more noticeable for their separate function. I think it would lessen the learning curve that much more for future "beginners"
For us guys who already own the product, maybe a "painted" marker can be used to high-light these reference lines so it becomes that much easier for us to remember the required two "line-up" moves for next time
