The quest for a cheap RV can lead you down many paths and frustrations until you reach your goal. 'Cheap' is a relative term, relative to the size of your bankroll and ambition. Some of us with little or no bankroll have to figure in a goodly amount of sweat equity to even get close to our goals. IF you are shy on the bankroll, big on ambition, then this little section will no doubt be for you. IF you are on the other side with the ample bankroll, go spend it and get to RV'ing, you can afford it.
Looking for cheap in regards to an RV is a tough nut to crack. Local papers and flyers will serve you well. Don't forget Ebay and if things keep coming up zero, expand your search to whatever radius you are comfortable with. Before you get too carried away, know, or at least have a good guess about what kind of RV you are looking for. If your trailer backing ability is like mine, these won't be an option. If you are like my buddy Harry, and can back a trailer through the eye of a needle, travel trailers might be just what you need. Before you get all fired up, you might want to consult with your significant other who might have a wrench or two to toss into the planning.
Already having a big truck, my first thought was a slide-in camper. The advantages they have are many in regards to backroads and boondocking. They don't have the space or accomodations of the bigger outfits but they can be really nice. I looked at some and they were either beyond my measely budget or the folks would have had to pay ME to take them. I never did find one that met my requirements.
As mentioned before, I wasted no time on travel trailers as I knew from the get go that this was not for me. I did toy with the idea once or twice when I would encounter a really cheap one. My common sense kept me straight.
I didn't look at any really tiny van campers as this was not what I wanted. I looked at a few class A campers but these were not what I wanted either. Had I found one at my kind of price, I might have done it, but mainly I was looking for a class C camper.
Finding campers to look at isn't all that hard. Finding them in the cheap category is another matter. Pristine and cheap are not words that go together. You can get one or the other, not both. Cheap, is going to need some work. How much work pretty much hinges on the price. Like the old saying, "You get what you pay for."
Evaluating your find, you need to keep in your mind your own personal ability. How much of the work can you do yourself and how much will you need to farm out. Don't bite off hunks you can't chew, be realistic about your own ability or you will simply be buying yourself a money pit that will eat up all you throw at it and want more.
