First off, if you intend to work wood, you need ways to cut it down to workable size. Handsaws are available in many different flavors and you can start there or go with power and get a circular saw or saber saw. These basics will get you started for cutting things down to size. There will always be something better, faster, neater, depending on your budget and your goals. What you get will always be a personal and difficult decision. The only caveat I can offer here is buy the best you can afford. Quality tools will pay off in the end. Cheap tools have a way of biting you in the backside. Personally, I have found the Porter Cable left side circular saw a real asset to my woodwork. No, I am not left-handed, I just like the extra visibility it offers me when I am cutting and I like the easy blade change. Just because I like it does not mean you will. I also use a Skil which does a lot of my bulk and beater work. I keep different blades on each saw so they each have specific uses. I could get by with just one but, I have gotten lazy and enjoy the convenience of having two.
