Finding the works to make pens or keychains is as simple as going online and looking for them.  I get my stuff from The Wooden Post.  A mandrel to hold the blanks and bushings are a must.  A LIVE center should be used but they can be done with a dead center, its just hard on the mandrel.  Brass tubes are inserted into the turning blocks by smearing super glue prior to insertion, the tubes stay put.  A quick touch on the sander will level the block to the tube and square the end.  Turning them is like turning anything else except they are running on a mandrel.  IF you chunk out a piece or go to far and expose the tube, CAREFULLY remove the remaining wood and the tube can be reused.  IF you damage the tube itself, you are just out of luck.
