The router can be one of your most used tools in your shop since it has capability to perform many different task. You can free hand a straight edge on your lumber by using a guide (known straight) and a pattern bit. The roller bearing follows the known straight guide while the bit flutes cut the board to match the guide. Another way to do this is with a router table where one side of the table fence is offset a small amount from the other. You are basically making a jointer out of your router table.
If you look closely you should be able to tell the offset is minimal but enough to offer good clean up on the edge of an average board. A little closer shot might help you follow this.
It looks greater than it is as far as how much offset is there. The fence closest to you in the picture is behind the cutting flutes while the fence farthest away from you is where the cut edge of the board rides. You are feeding the lumber from front to rear in the picture.
